 The bewitched bathing-house  ( 2 ) 

魔法をかけられている着替え小屋

     He came to the cave on the hill and skipped inside.

　　彼は、丘の上のホラ穴へ来て、跳ねながら中へ入りました。

But when he had got there he wasn't able to concentrate any longer, and so he forgot all about his mattress.

でも、彼がそこへ着いていたとき、彼は、もう、集中することが出来なくて、それで、彼のマットレスについては、全て忘れました。

Instead he sat down on his tail and began to think that people could just as well call him 'the squirrel with the marvellous whiskers'. 

そのかわり、彼は自分の尾の上に座り  /  そして、考え始めました  /  皆が彼を '見事な頬ひげのあるリス' と呼んでもいいのに、と。　          

     Behind the great snowdrift at the opening of the cave somebody had spread out straw on the floor.

     ホラ穴の口のところの、大きな雪の吹き溜まりの後ろに、誰かが、藁を、床の上に広げていました。

And in the straw stood a large cardboard box with the lid partly raised.

そして、その藁のなかに、大きな厚紙の箱が立っていました  /  蓋が少し上げられて。

＊　raised:  raise『他動詞』「上げる」　の『過去分詞』

「(これまでに、上げてしまって / その結果、いま）上げられてしまっている（状態の）」

     'That's strange,' said the squirrel aloud, with some surprise.

　　’あれは変だ’ と、そのリスは声に出して言いました  /  すこし驚いて。

'That cardboard box wasn't here before.

’あの厚紙の箱は、ここに、前には、無かったぞ。

Must be something wrong about it. 

あれには、なにか違うものがあるに違いない。

＊  (There) Must be something wrong about it.

Or else this is the wrong cave.

そうでなければ、これは違うホラ穴だ。

Or I might be the wrong squirrel, but I woudn't like to believe that.'   

それとも、ぼくが違うリスなのかもしれない、でも、それは信じたくないな。

＊　might:   may の『過去形』のかたちですが、

may の『過去形』のかたちをとることで『現在』において may よりも実現性の弱い可能性を表すので、『現在形』です。

＊　would:　will の『過去形』のかたちですが、

will の『過去形』のかたちをとることで『現在』において will よりも実現性の弱い意志を表すので、『現在形』です。　

　　実現性が弱い（強引に実現させようとしない）ので、would like は、控え目な感じになります。

He poked up a corner of the lid and put his head inside the box. 

彼は蓋の角を持ち上げて、頭を箱の中に入れました。
