第二次大戦においてドイツ軍の名パイロットと評された Adolf Galland の手記から。


Galland が初めて solo flight をしたのは１７歳のときで、in a glider でした。



  The saying that the gods demand sweat and tears before they grant success

has no truer application than in the sport of gliding.

  神は、ものごとを達成させてくれる前に、汗と涙を求める、という格言が、　

グライダーを操縦することほどに当てはまるものは無い。　



  When, after months or sometimes years of hard labour in the workshop,




your turn comes at last to fly, you may be airborne for only a few seconds,

and, worse still, your crate may break up,

demanding more weeks and months of grind  aided by many industrious and

unselfish helpers




before the bird can fly again.

　何ヶ月、ときには何年も、作業場で懸命にはたらき、ついに飛ぶ番が来て、

空中に浮かぶのは数秒のこともあり、もっと悪ければ、機体は壊れ、

更に数週間か数ヶ月の、黙々とした作業が必要になり、

グライダーが再び飛べるまで、

大勢の人々に、骨惜しみしせずに手を貸してもらうことになることもある。
