(24) Celtic Wicca by Jane Raeburn ( Citadel Press )

So What Do We Know?   (12)

Relatively few pictures or statues of the Celtic gods survive, in part because of the Celtic leaning toward symbol rather than representation in art.

Indeed, the person just discovering Celtic religion is sometimes dismayed at the "crudeness" of Celtic depictions of their gods.

The Celts had the skills to produce original and beautiful works of art.

Why didn't they do this for their gods?

Historian Miranda Green provides an explanation:   The Celts, like some other ancient cultures, believed their gods transcended human form and mundane existence.

Therefore, a depiction of such a god should transcend realism.

Its very unreal appearance was a way of honoring the deity.

Another common way art helps us learn about Celtic religion is through the animals and trees accompanying a deity, indicating that deity's power.

The Celts' relationship with nature should not be romanticized ( indeed, one scholar notes that Iron Age Celts cleared huge tracts of forest from the English Midlands, forever changing the region's ecosystem).

Still, we can safely assume they were far more attuned to the cycles of nature than most modern inhabitants of first-world nations, with our central heating and supermarkets.

(30) Medieval Europe by Martin Scott ( Dorset Press / New York )

 Education gives a similar picture.

The urban schools which the Empire supported gradually broke down:   they had been dependent on a level of economic prosperity which no longer existed.

The Latin culture died hard, and in the sixth century men like Boethius and Cassiodorus were still to be found writing in the old tradition of Latin letters in defiance of the barbarism of those whom they felt it their duty to serve.

But it was doomed.

The future of education, almost of civilization itself, lay with the Church;   it is significant that Cassiodorus himself ended his long life in a monastic community at Vivarium.

The supply of educated laymen slowly ran dry, and with it disappeared the possibility of resurrecting anything like the old imperial civil service.

Instead the situation came about which was to last for most of the Middle Ages in which the Church had a monopoly of education and learning.

(1) Living in North America (1) George Friedman

" The Storm before the Calm"      ( Anchor Books / New York )  より

The Atlantic and the Appalachians defined the colonies.

The distance between the two shaped not just the commercial but the moral nature of the colonies.

South of Pennsylvania, the Appalacians were over two hundred miles from the Atlantic coast.

There was flat, fertile land in abundance, for large commercial plantations.

North of Pennsylvania, the distance from the mountains to the oceans was much less, the soil was rocky and hilly, and the winters were long.

There was room only for family farms, craftsmen, merchants, and bankers.

In the South, large plantations needed cheap labor.

In the North, a helper or two was all that was required.

This distinction defined American history, slave and free,  confederate and unionist.

It was there from the beginning.

Geography made slavery desirable and profitable in the South.

In the North, geography made slavery uneconomical.

Thus, we see the geographic foundation of the institutional and moral crisis that tore the United States apart centuries later.

(18) Richard Matheson

He wondered what Ruth would think of all this, how  she'd react.

Probably, she'd start to honk the horn and would keep on honking it, assuming that, eventually, it would attract the attention of a policeman.

He looked around with a scowl.

Just where in hell were the policemen out here, anyway?

He made a scoffing noise.

What policemen?

Here in the boondocks?

They probably had a sheriff on horseback, for Christ's sake?

He wondered suddenly if he could fool the truck driver by passing on the right.

Edging his car toward the shoulder, he peered ahead.

No chance.

There wasn't room enough.

The truck driver could shove him through that wire fence if he wanted to.

Mann shivered.

And he'd want to, sure as hell, he thought.

Driving where he was, he grew conscious of the debris lying beside the highway:   beer cans, candy wrappers, ice-cream containers, newspaper sections browned and rotted by the weather, a FOR SALE sign torn in half.

Keep America beautiful, he thought sardonically.

He passed a boulder with the name WILL JASPER painted on it in white.

Who the hell is Will Jasper?  he wondered.

What would he think of this situation?

CHAPTER (2)

The bewitched bathing house (8)

And Moomintroll turned around and slowly plodded back in his own tracks.

'I'll wind all the clocks,' he thought.

'Perhaps that makes the spring come a tiny bit earlier.

(18)The Spaceship of Ezekiel by Josef F. Blumrich ( Bantam Books )

Josef F. Blumrich: NASAで、Saturn V(月に着陸した Apollo 宇宙船や、地球周回軌道上のSkylab 宇宙ステ―ションの打ち上げに使われた、全長110.6m のロケット)の開発に参加した航空宇宙エンジニア

 1.The Situation   ( 18th )

Another aspect of these studies concerns the idea that such visitors and their equipment---for fundamental reasons---would have to be and look different from us and from whatever we use.

The tendency to attribute a priori to an extraterrestrial civilization fanciful, mysterious, or unfamiliar shapes and capabilities often overlooks the proposition that a resemblance is in fact much more probable than a substantial difference.

We shall come back to this theme later.

Today any mention of extraterrestrial visits immediately brings up the question "Where from and how?"

This is only natural since, in the final analysis, the answer to this dual question is of literally worldwide importance.

But we have no amswer.

For the time being the problems it entails are too numerous and too large for us to resolve.

This often leads to a conclusion which in its simplest form would be approximately tantamount to saying: "We do not know where they came from, so they can not have been here."

The case for a meteoroid origin was finally settled by the chemist Edward Howard with the assistance of the French nobleman  and scientist Jacques-Louis, Comte de Bournon, who had been exiled to London during the French Revolution in 1800.

Howard and the Comte analyzed a meteorite that had fallen near Benares in India.

They uncovered an amount of nickel that was much greater than would be expected on the Earth's surface as well as stony materials that had been fused by high pressure.

The chemical analyses that Thomson, Howard, and the Comte performed were precisely the sort of thing that the German scientist Ernst Florens Friedrich Chladni had suggested to confirm his own hypothesis that such objects hit the Earth at too great a speed to be consistent with other proposed explanations.

In fact, the Siena fall occurred only two months after the publication of Chladni's book, 'On the Origin of Ironmasses,' which had---alas---received negative reviews and an unfavorable response before the Berlin newspapers eventually got round to reporting the Siena fall two years after it occurred.

The New Realities 新しい現実(19) Peter Drucker

No More Salvation by Society (1)

'As long as it does not threaten the Communist Party's  monopoly of power, it's socialism.'

This is the new 'party line' preached by Mikhail Gorbachev in Russia and by Deng Xiao Ping in China.

But this is not a new pragmatism, as the western press calls it.

It is the ideology of naked power (and very old).

It totally abjures everything that communism of any kind -- or socialism for that matter -- ever stood for.

It is as if the Pope declared that as long as Catholics pay Peter's pence to Rome it does not matter whether they believe in Christ or not.

This policy brazenly recants the fundamental claim which allowed Karl Marx to call his doctrine 'scientific socialism:   the promise of an everlasting society which achieves both social perfection and individual perfection, a society which establishes the earthly paradise.

It was this belief in 'salvation by society' that gave Marxism its tremendous appeal.

*   It [ that gave Marxism its tremendous appeal ]  was   this belief in 'salvayion by society'

        S                                                                                                V                C

Yet no one except a small handful of superannuated party hacks were surprized by Gorbachev's ideology of power.

Everybody else -- and especially in the communist countries -- had much earlier lost all faith in salvation by society.

Everybody else had become not a pragmatist but a cynic.

The Pillars of Hercules:    A Grand Tour of the Mediterranean

                   by Paul Theroux

                                                                                   ( Penguin Books )   より

Even so, the Mediterranean has an odd character.

It has almost no tides at all, and except for a whirlpool here and there ( notably at Messina ) an absence of distinct marine currents.

It is dominated by winds rather than currents, and each wind has a name and is associated with a series of specific traits:   there is the Vendaval, the steady westerly that blows through the Straits of Gibraltar;   the Tramontana, the strong wind of the Spanish coast;   the Bora, the cold wind of Trieste;   the Mistral, the cold, dry north-westerly of the Riviera, and so on, through the Khamsin, the Sirocco, the Levanter, and about six others ( often the same name ) to the Gregale, the north-east wind of Malta that blows in winter and was more than likely the wind that caused St Paul to be shipwrecked on the Maltese coast as described in the Bible ( Acts 27-28 ).

(9) How to get to Mars by Andrew May

Destination Mars:   The Story of Our Quest to Conquer the Red Planet

The word 'orbit' usually conjures up the image of a spacecraft following a circular trajectory around the Earth, but that's not the only possibility.

Intersecting any point on that circular orbit, there are an infinite number of other orbits with different speeds in different directions.

A spacecraft going significantly faster than the circular orbit will loop out on an elongated path, taking it to a much higher altitude on the opposite side of the Earth.

If it's going fast enough --- faster than Earth's 'escape velocity' --- it won't be in orbit around the Earth at all.

The spacecraft will still follow an orbit, but it's an orbit around the Sun instead of the Earth.

Depending on its exact velocity, this orbit could take the spacecraft to Venus, or Jupiter, or Neptune ... or Mars.

That's why delta-v is so important.

The generals who led the decisive victory against the Yellow Turbans just east of Luoyang were immediately removed from their posts by eunuchs whom Emperor Ling had put in command of a newly restructured capital army.

However, the death of the emperor on May 15, 186, led to the appointment of a regent who secretly summoned the frontier general Dong Zhuo to the capital from the northwest and put out political feelers to the anti-eunuch faction.

When the eunuchs discovered these clandestine moves, they murdered the regent, which in turn provoked junior officers of the new capital army, notably the cousins Yuan Shao and Yuan Shu, to seize Luoyang and massacre the eunuchs.

          This triumph was short-lived, however.

Having seized control of a court from which they had been excluded for two decades, the anti-eunuch partisans found that political power now resided not in office but in military force.

Once Dong Zhuo arrived in the capital, he established himself as a military dictator, which led the officers of the armed forces that had destroyed the eunuchs to flee east to recruit new troops from their local bases.

Concerned about this impending threat, Dong Zhuo took the boy emperor Xian and his court back to Dong's home base, Chang'an.

His soldiers burned Luoyang to the ground.

You might expect that the bigger the star is, the more fuel it has, and hence the longer its lifetime will be.

This turns out to be wrong, however, because the inward pull of gravity is greater for big stars, and hence they have to burn their fuel faster.

Consequently, bigger stars actually have shorter lifetimes than smaller ones.

To get some sense of the wide variability of stellar lifetimes, let's shrink the 13.8-billion-year lifetime of the universe down to a single year.

In this compressed time scale , the Sun and our solar system formed around Labor Day, and our Sun, changed into white dwarf, will die around the next Tax Day---April 15.

Very large stars,  on the other hand, would live only about half an hour before exploding into supernovae, while very small stars, which can easily have lifetimes in tens or even hundreds of billions of years, could go on shining for a dozen of our compredssed years.

Thus, small stars that were made in the early days of the universe will certainly have been shining for much longer than our Sun.

The AI-controlled autonomous airship is going to be flying over the hills at noon.

be going to do

と

will do

He is going to fall.

He will fall.

通常の  be going to fly は、

The AI-controlled autonomous airship is going to fly over the hills at noon.

The AI-controlled autonomous airship is going to "fly" over the hills at noon.

The AI-controlled autonomous airship is going to" be flying" over the hills at noon.

"The sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its net of wonder forever."

The ecological development of atolls is tightly interwoven with the isolation provided by their surrounding  waters.

This isolation fosters unique evolutionary pathways that can lead to the emergence of endemic species---organisms found nowhere else on Earth.

For instance, the Hawaiian Islands, which were formed by volcanic activity and are surrounded by miles of ocean, are renowned for their high levels of endemism among flora and fauna.

Species such as the Hawaiian silversword plant and the Hawaiian honeycreepers exhibit adaptations that have allowed them to thrive in these specific habitats, unattainable elsewhere.

Such adaptive radiations are a direct result of the isolated evolutionary pressures faced by species on atolls.

The year 1865 is significant here, of course, because it was not until Palmerston's death -- and as a reaction to his internal and external policies -- that his successors were able to initiate the tradition described above.

Under Gladstone in particular, they adopted, first, a strategy of internal 'appeasement' , by which is meant that broad series of reforms in the structures of government so that they were more in line with the economic developments and social demands of the day;  hence, following Disraeli's 1867 Reform Act came the sweeping changes in the army, education, civil service, Irish disestablishment, etc. instituted by the Liberals.

We observe an albatross.

We have observed an albatross for two hours. (『

   ***for two hours

   ***an albatross

(β)は、『助動詞』be ( am, is , are  /  was, were )に仲介されて『主語』と接続し、

*『否定文』= 『助動詞 do, does  / did』+not  + do「~する」

*『進行形』= 『助動詞  am, are, is / was, were  』+ doing「~している状態」

*『受け身』=『助動詞 am, are, is  /  was, were』 +    done「~されてしまっている状態」

『進行形』= be(人称形)+ doing

『受け身』= be(人称形) + done、

『現在完了』= have, has + done
