          The generals who led the decisive victory against the Yellow Turbans just east of Luoyang were immediately removed from their posts by eunuchs whom Emperor Ling had put in command of a newly restructured capital army.

However, the death of the emperor on May 15, 186, led to the appointment of a regent who secretly summoned the frontier general Dong Zhuo to the capital from the northwest and put out political feelers to the anti-eunuch faction.

しかし、１８６年５月１５日の皇帝の死は、摂政 [ 彼は、密かに、辺境司令官・董卓を、首都に、北西の辺境から呼び寄せ、反宦官派に政治的な探りを入れた ] の任命につながった。

When the eunuchs discovered these clandestine moves, they murdered the regent, which in turn provoked junior officers of the new capital army, notably the cousins Yuan Shao and Yuan Shu, to seize Luoyang and massacre the eunuchs.

Having seized control of a court from which they had been excluded for two decades, the anti-eunuch partisans found that political power now resided not in office but in military force.

Once Dong Zhuo arrived in the capital, he established himself as a military dictator, which led the officers of the armed forces that had destroyed the eunuchs to flee east to recruit new troops from their local bases.

Concerned about this impending threat, Dong Zhuo took the boy emperor Xian and his court back to Dong's home base, Chang'an.

 His soldiers burned Luoyang to the ground.
