 No More Salvation by Society (1)

もう社会による救済はない

'As long as it does not threaten the Communist Party's  monopoly of power, it's socialism.'  

’それが、共産党の権力の独占を脅かさないかぎり、それは社会主義である。’

This is the new 'party line' preached by Mikhail Gorbachev in Russia and by Deng Xiao Ping in China.

これは、ロシアではミハイル・ゴルバチョフによって、中国では鄧小平によって説かれた、新しい’党の路線’である。

But this is not a new pragmatism, as the western press calls it. 

しかし、これは、西側の報道機関が呼ぶような、新しいプラグマティズム【実用主義】ではない。

It is the ideology of naked power (and very old).

それは、剥き出しの権力（しかも、とても古い）のイデオロギー、である。

＊　権力を正当化しようとすることもなく、力・権力が支配するのは当然、とする古いイデオロギー

It totally abjures everything that communism of any kind -- or socialism for that matter -- ever stood for. 

それは、すべてのもの [ そのために、あらゆる種類の共産主義 -- あるいは、さらに会主義も-- が、これまで戦った ]を、全面的に撤回している。 

It is as if the Pope declared that as long as Catholics pay Peter's pence to Rome it does not matter whether they believe in Christ or not.  

それは、あたかも、ローマ教皇が、カトリック教徒がローマ教皇庁に毎年の支援金を払うかぎり、彼らがキリストを信じても信じなくても問題ではない、と宣言するようなものである。

『過去形』のカタチを借りて「現実に反する内容」を、

つまり、

ローマ教皇が、「Peter’s penceを払いさえすれば、キリストを信じても信じなくてもよい」　と言うはずはないけれども、まるでそう宣言するように、という内容を表すための、

カタチの上の『過去形』。　

         This policy brazenly recants the fundamental claim which allowed Karl Marx to call his doctrine 'scientific socialism:   the promise of an everlasting society which achieves both social perfection and individual perfection, a society which establishes the earthly paradise.   

　　この政策は、根本的な主張 [それが、カール・マルクスに、彼のドクトリンを’科学的社会主義’と呼ぶことを可能ならしめた ] を、臆面もなく取り消している：　（その主張とは、）永遠に続く社会 [ それは、社会の完璧さと個人の完璧さの両方、を達成する ] と、社会 [それは、地上の楽園を創り上げる ]、 の約束。　

 

It was this belief in 'salvation by society' that gave Marxism its tremendous appeal.

マルキシズムに、その、きわめて大きな魅力を与えたのは、’社会による救済’が信じられたこと、だった。

Yet no one except a small handful of superannuated party hacks were surprized by Gorbachev's ideology of power.

しかし、党の忠実な支持者である少数の年金受給者を除いて、ゴルバチョフの権力のイデオロギーに驚く者は誰もいなかった。

Everybody else -- and especially in the communist countries -- had much earlier lost all faith in salvation by society.

それ以外の人々 -- とくに共産主義国の -- は、ずっと以前に、社会による救済をまったく信じなくなっていた。 

Everybody else had become not a pragmatist but a cynic. 

他の誰もが、プラグマティストではなくて冷笑家になってしまっていた。
