   **　had ＋ got  の場合、

　　　got は「（これまでに）（～ の状態に）なってしまった（という実績）」

　　　を表し、

　　　had は「（その実績）を持っていた」という内容で、

　　　「状態」が a little past New Year なので、 

「しかし、春が遥かに遠かったのは、

　この年が、新年を少し過ぎたばかりだったからでした」

 The sea lay asleep under the ice, 

and deep down among the roots of the earth  all small beasts were sleepimg 

and dreaming of spring.

 

海は氷の下で眠っていて、

大地の深いところでは、全ての小さな生き物たちが眠っていて、

春の夢を見ていました。

＊　the sea は横たわっていて、その時の状態が asleep でした ( The sea ＝ asleep )

＊　sleeping は、

　　sleep（「眠る」「）の「眠っている」という「状態」を表すので、

『形容詞』に似たものになり、

「形容詞」asleep（「眠って」）を

They are asleep  と使うように（are は「イコール」）、

All small beast were sleeping  のようになります（were も「イコール」）。

ただ、同じ「イコール」でも、

『形容詞』asleep を『主語』They につなげる、

They are asleep の are は『自動詞』で、

 

「眠っている」という「動きの状態」を表す sleeping（『現在分詞』） を、

『主語』All small beasts につなげる were は『助動詞』です。

『助動詞』were は、

「sleep という動きが発生しつつある状態」を表す『現在分詞』sleeping を、

『主語』All small beasts につなげます。

＊　dreaming of も、

dream of ～（「～の夢を見る」）の『現在分詞』「～の夢を見ている（状態）」です。

The sky was almost black, but the snow shone a bright blue in the moonlight.

 空は暗黒と言っていいほどでしたが、雪は月明かりの中で空色に輝いていました。

＊　snowed :  snow（「雪でおおう」『他動詞』）の『過去分詞』

　　　　　　　『過去分詞』は、「ある時点で、動きにケリをつける」ので、

　　「（ある時点までに）雪でおおってしまった」という動きですが、

　　『他動詞』の『目的語』は、その動きの「はたらきかけ」を受けて、

　　「その時点」以降は、「雪でおおわれてしまっている」という「状態」になります。

　　「 ～（の動き）をされてしまっている（状態）」を表す『過去分詞』で、

『受身（受動）』「～される」を表現できます。

　And what about the infantry, the king of arms?

　もっとも重要な兵器である歩兵はどうか？


Near the end of the war, the experts unanimously declared that not even a modern mechanized war could be won without the infantry, who after all went on foot.  

戦争の末期、専門家は、そろって、歩兵は所詮は歩いて移動するのだが、その歩兵が無ければ、機械化された現代の戦争であっも勝てない、と断言した。


Germans should, I suppose, have been forbidden to walk! 

ということは、ドイツ人は歩くことを禁止されるべきだったのだ!。

＊ should + "have + 'been forbidden' "  のようになっています。

   Obviously this did not make sense, and at the same time it was dangerous, because the young German gliding sport developed in an atmosphere of national frustration.

   明らかにこれは馬鹿気ていたし、同時に危険でもあった。なぜなら、成長期のドイツのスポーツとしてのグライダー飛行は、国民的なフラストレーションという雰囲気の中で育って行ったからだ。



All the activities of these young and enthusiastic glider pilots took place
under the caption 'In spite of', and this ruling of the Allies was felt to be
 a most arbitrary expression of arrogance on the part of the victors.  

　これら若く熱心なグライダー・パイロットの活動は、すべて、「それにもかかわらず」という説明書きのもとにおこなわれた。そして、連合軍側のこの決定は、勝者の側の傲慢さの独断的な表現と感じられた、



The man who could one day throw off these fetters once and for all was assured of the fullest support from the enthusiastic aviators in the ranks of Germany's youth.  

 いつの日かこの制限を一気に撤廃することの出来た者は、ドイツの若者のなかの意欲的な飛行士からの、全面的な支持を保証されていた。

This was ten years after the end of the First World War.


The Treaty of Versailles virtually forbade Germany to have any aircraft.

ヴェルサイユ条約は、ドイツが航空機を保有することを、事実上、禁止した。


I could never understand this.


Admittedly aeroplanes had become an instrument of warfare,

and therefore the victors refused to allow the vanquished to use them;   

but had not cars also become military weapons

in the form of mechanized and armoured divisions?


たしかに、航空機は戦争の道具になっていたから、

敗者が航空機を用いることを、勝者は許さなかったのである；

しかし、自動車も、機械化され装甲を施された師団というかたちで、

兵器になっていたのではなかったか？


Driving a car should also have been regarded as military activity

and should by rights have been banned too.


自動車を運転することも軍事行動と見なされるべきだったし、

当然のこととしてこれも禁止されるべきだったのである。

第二次大戦においてドイツ軍の名パイロットと評された Adolf Galland の手記から。


Galland が初めて solo flight をしたのは１７歳のときで、in a glider でした。

　何ヶ月、ときには何年も、作業場で懸命にはたらき、ついに飛ぶ番が来て、

空中に浮かぶのは数秒のこともあり、もっと悪ければ、機体は壊れ、

更に数週間か数ヶ月の、黙々とした作業が必要になり、

グライダーが再び飛べるまで、

大勢の人々に、骨惜しみしせずに手を貸してもらうことになることもある。
