 The Pillars of Herculese:  A Grand Tour of the Mediterranean

”The grand object of traveling is to see the shores of the Mediterranean," Dr Johnson said.

「旅の大きな目的は、地中海の岸を見ることである」と、ジョンソン博士【samuel Johnson １８世紀の英国の文学者　通称"Dr Johnson" 】は、言った。

"On those shores were the four great Empires of the world;  the Assyrian, the Persian, the Grecian, and the Roman.  

「その岸には、世界の四つの偉大な帝国が存在した；　アッシリア、ペルシャ、ギリシャ、そしてローマである。

All our religion, almost all our law, almost all our arts, almost all that sets us above savages, has come to us from the shores of the Mediterranean."

全ての私たちの宗教、ほとんど全ての私たちの法律、ほとんど全ての私たちの芸術、私たちを野蛮人を超える位置に置いているほとんど全ては、地中海の岸から私たちへもたらされている」

     "Our" of course is as questionable as "savages," but you get the idea.

　　「私たちの」は、もちろん、「野蛮人」と同じ程度に、疑問の余地があるが、言わんとすることはわかるでしょう。

A great deal happened on this coastline.

じつに多くのことが、この海岸線で起こった。

It was not until the second century B.C. that the Romans sailed through the Pillars of Hercules.

ローマ人がヘラクレスの柱を通り抜けて航海したのは、紀元前二世紀を過ぎてからだった。

The reason for this late, if not timid, penetration of the straits was not the currents, nor was it the inconvenient westerlies that blow through this narrow opening of the inland sea;  it was the Mediterranean notion that nothing lay beyond the pillars except the Isles of the Hesperids and the lost continent of Atlantis, and hellish seas. 

臆病からではないにしても、これほどに遅れたその海峡の通過の理由は、潮流ではなく、内海の狭い開口部を通って吹く、都合の悪い西風でもなかった；　その理由は、二つの大岩の向こうには、へスぺリデスの島【黄金の林檎が実る果樹園があるとされた、ギリシャ神話のなかの、世界の果ての島】やアトランティスの失われた大陸、それに荒海しかない、という、地中海についての考えだった。
