Moominland Midwinter ( 6th )

 Puffin Books     p. 11

The current kept the stream open all winter.

But there were no tracks leading over the bridge,

and no one had touched the snowdrifts around the house.

* The current(S)  kept(V)  the stream(O)  open(C)  all winter.

                                       **  the stream = open

*

  **  leading = lead「通じる」をもとにして、

   **   had touched

      Someone touched the snowdrifts.

Moominland Midwinter ( 5th )

Puffin Books     ( p. 11 )

It looked very lonely and rather like a drift of snow.

Quite near it ran a bend of the river, coal-black between ice-edges.

* It(S)  Looked(V)  very lonely(C-1)  and  rather like a drift of snow(C-2).

* Quite near it ran(V)  a bend of the river(S),

     **  the river = coal-black between ice-edges

 The snowed-up drawing room     (4)

 Puffin Books   p. 11

At the point where the valley began its soft slope towards the mountains,

stood a snowed-up house.

*  At the point [ where the valley began its soft slope / towards the mountains ],

stood(V)  a snowed-up  house(S).

  **  At the point [ where(= At the point  )

Moominland Midwinter (3)

 But spring was quite a bit away

because the year had only just got a little past New Year.

* had・・・ got

   ** had + got  の場合、

   「状態」が a little past New Year なので、

Moominland Midwinter(2)

The snowed-up drawing-room  (2)

(Pufinn Books    p. 11)

 The sea lay asleep under the ice,

and deep down among the roots of the earth  all small beasts were sleepimg

and dreaming of spring.

* the sea は横たわっていて、その時の状態が asleep でした ( The sea = asleep )

* sleeping は、

「形容詞」asleep(「眠って」)を

They are asleep  と使うように(are は「イコール」)、

All small beast were sleeping  のようになります(were も「イコール」)。

They are asleep の are は『自動詞』で、

「眠っている」という「動きの状態」を表す sleeping(『現在分詞』) を、

* dreaming of も、

The snowed-up drawing room

 ( Puffin Books  "Moominland Midwinter"   p. 11 )

The sky was almost black, but the snow shone a bright blue in the moonlight.

* snowed :  snow(「雪でおおう」『他動詞』)の『過去分詞』

       『過去分詞』は、「ある時点で、動きにケリをつける」ので、

* the snow が輝いていて、その色が a blight blue でした ( the snow = a bright blue )

The First and The Last

 And what about the infantry, the king of arms?

Near the end of the war, the experts unanimously declared that not even a modern mechanized war could be won without the infantry, who after all went on foot.

Germans should, I suppose, have been forbidden to walk!

* should + "have + 'been forbidden' "  のようになっています。

   Obviously this did not make sense, and at the same time it was dangerous, because the young German gliding sport developed in an atmosphere of national frustration.

All the activities of these young and enthusiastic glider pilots took place
under the caption 'In spite of', and this ruling of the Allies was felt to be
 a most arbitrary expression of arrogance on the part of the victors.

The man who could one day throw off these fetters once and for all was assured of the fullest support from the enthusiastic aviators in the ranks of Germany's youth.
