１２世紀の諸都市の重要性

          The role of the Church was vital to the administration and defence of many of these mercantile cities. 

　　 キリスト教会の役割は、これらの貿易都市の多くの行政と防衛にとって、きわめて重要だった。

Senior members of the German church hierarchy tended to come from the same aristocratic class as rulers, governors and military commanders --- indeed, several senior churchmen proved to be effective military leaders, a characteristic of the German church that persisted well into the 15th century.  

ドイツの教会の階層における高位の聖職者は、統治者・地方行政官・軍司令官と同じ貴族階級からの出身である傾向があった ---  じっさいに、何人かの教会の高位聖職者は、有能な軍の指揮者であることが証明されており、１５世紀に入っても長く続いたドイツの教会の特徴だった。

          The Germans were not, of course, the only crusading and expansionist Christian people on the southern Baltic coast during this period.

　　 ドイツ人は、もちろん、この時代の、南部バルト海沿岸における、唯一の、【北方】十字軍の運動をおこなって勢力圏拡大を目指したキリスト教を信ずる人々、ではなかった。

Denmark was carving out a Baltic empire that would stretch from Holstein to Estonia, including part of what is now Sweden. 

デンマークは、バルト帝国 [ それは、ホルシュタインからエストニアまで、現在のスウェーデンである場所の一部を含んで、拡がろうとしていた ] を、つくりつつあった。

Lubeck itself fell to the Danish king shortly after a Crusader fleet left its port in 1201.

リューベックそれ自体は、【北方】十字軍の艦隊が、１２０１年にその港を出た直ぐ後で、デンマーク王の支配下に入った。

Seen from the Danish point of view, Lubeck was thereby eliminated as a military asset for its rival, the Count of Holstein;   however, the move looked different to those who recognized Lubeck's importance in the Northern Crusade. 

デンマークの視点から見られると、これによって【デンマークがリューベックを支配するようになったことによって】、リューベックは、デンマークのライヴァルであるホルシュタイン伯爵の軍事的資産ではなくなった；　しかし、この動きは、北方十字軍におけるリュ－ベックの重要性を認識していた人々にとっては、違って見えた。

Further Danish expansion followed, and, for supporting Frederick II as German Emperor against his rivals, Valdemar II of Denmark was rewarded by having his authority over Schleswig, Holstein, the Wendish lands and Pomerania recognized by the Emperor.  

さらなるデンマークの拡大はこの後も続き、フリードリヒII世をドイツ皇帝として、その複数のライヴァル【神聖ローマ皇帝に選出される際の競争相手】に対抗すべく支持したことによって、デンマークのヴァルデマーII世は、シュレスヴィヒ、ホルシュタイン、ヴェンド人【西スラヴ人】の土地、ポメラニアに対する支配権をドイツ皇帝によって認めてもらう、という見返りを得た。

Indeed, for a while it seemed as if the Baltic might become a Danish lake.

じっさいに、しばらくの間は、バルト海はデンマークの内海になるかもしれない、と思われた。
