ローマ帝国に衰退の兆しが見え、周辺の諸民族が活発に活動していた頃の、北方の異民族が進入した東アジアの状況です。


(a)  When the Han state collapsed, the behavior of the northern nomads

　漢帝国が崩壊したとき、チャイナの領域に新たに定住し漢の軍隊のためにはたらく過程でどのように北方の遊牧を生業とする諸民族と漢帝国の間の共生という状態が（それまでに）現れていたのか、ということを、彼らの行動が明らかにした。


(b)  Rather than attempting to conquer territory or establish their own dynasties,

they first sought out new patrons among the warlords.

(c)  The subsequent Cao-Wei and Jin dynasties continued to offer payments and

trading rights to nomad rulers in exchange for military service, and nomadic

horsemen were essential to their armies.

　漢に続く曹氏の魏王朝、さらに晋王朝は、遊牧民の首長たちに、軍の勢力としてはたらくことの見返りに金品と交易権を与え、遊牧民の騎馬部隊は、王朝の軍にとって欠かせないものだった。


(d)  However, as the Jin disintegrated in the Rebellion of Eight Princes, this

patronage disappeared, and the nomadic chiefs had to seek new bases of power.

　しかし、晋王朝が『八王の乱』の内戦の中で滅亡したため、この庇護関係は消滅し、遊牧民のリーダーたちは、新たな力の拠り所を求めなくてはならなくなった。



魏から晋（西晋）にかけての時代の雰囲気は、次の詩から、ある程度、感じられるかもしれません。

It's thinking of how I've wasted my time　　      我が平常の時を念(おも)うに
That makes this fury tear my heart.　　　　　　悔恨此(これ)より生ず


Ch'ü-chêng  曲城　きょくせい（城＝成）　斉の剣の名手

　　　　　（『阮籍の生涯と詠懐詩』　松本幸男　木耳社　p248、249 ）　

   阮籍といえば、『竹林の七賢』のリーダー的な存在で、政争に巻き込まれるのを避けて竹林で老荘思想の抽象的な議論に耽った人、という先入観についとらわれて、武人というイメージが湧きづらいのですが、戦乱続きの三国時代の魏で成人した人なので、武芸への関心はむしろ当然のことだったかもしれません。
 　実際に従軍したとすれば、司馬懿が公孫淵を遼東に攻めた遠征（AD２３８）のとき、ということになるようです。　　　　　　　　　　　（『阮籍の生涯と詠懐詩』 p39 ）　


ちなみに、最後の二行では、

It is「thinking of how I've wasted my time」「that makes this fury tear my heart」
